WhatsApp is a popular messaging app for the Android, iOS, and Windows Phone users.
For years, it has offered free instant messaging as its main service as well as sending media (photos and videos). WhatsApp did not have other basic features which other messaging apps offer, but despite this scarcity of what it can do, it’s still able to gain more than half a billion monthly users. It was acquired by Facebook few years ago and since then the app continues to improve its services by introducing new features.
Voice Calling is Here
The most recent feature WhatsApp added is the ability to offer voice calling to its users. The feature, just like the rest of its services, uses your phone’s Internet connection to contact your loved ones. VoIP technology has proven to be one of the best inventions in this generation because, instead of using your phone’s call minutes, it uses your data connection or Wi-Fi to make the call. The addition of free voice calling makes WhatsApp an even more powerful messaging app as it continues to connect people across the world without extra charges.
How to Start WhatsApp Voice Call
WhatsApp’s free voice call allows you to call your friends and family for free without spending your phone’s call minutes. Take note that data charges may apply if you’re not connected to Wi-Fi. To start a call, open the chat with the contact you want to call and locate the phone button on the top right corner. Tapping the button will automatically start the call.
How to Receive a WhatsApp Call
When someone calls you on WhatsApp, an incoming call screen will appear. Slide the green button to answer the voice call or slide the red one to decline the call. If you can’t answer and want to decline the call with a message, tap the message button on the call. WhatsApp lets you make and receive voice calls from other WhatsApp users but it cannot access emergency service numbers and even 911.
Recent Tabs
WhatsApp also introduces a new tab which shows your recent calls. The tab consists of two lists – all recent calls and the calls you missed. Tapping the person’s name will automatically start a voice call. You can clear the list by tapping Edit on the top, followed by Clear.
Available on Windows Phone
WhatsApp’s free voice calling feature first started rolling out for Android devices and as an invitation-only before rolling out to all Android devices. WhatsApp for iOS soon followed by slowly rolling out the feature to select users and eventually it becomes available to all. The last operating system to add the feature is Microsoft’s Windows Phone.
Big Competitor for Other Voice Calling Apps
With the free voice call available on the three platforms, WhatsApp is now a big competitor for other popular voice calling apps like Viber and Skype. Although Skype is the first to offer VoIP, WhatsApp is not far behind in terms of users. WhatsApp users now have to wait for the next big update on the app – perhaps, a video calling feature?
